About Merry Lamb Lamb
First making her mark with debut album Genesis, an introspective exploration of eclectic ‘80s pop and throbbing house beats, her latest single showcases her evolution, drawing from her own experiences of personal growth during lockdown and exploring themes of identity, dislocation and belonging.
Merry’s journey from a self-reliant, shy teenager and arts student in Toronto to creating her exuberant artistic persona is one of resilience and self-discovery, as she established her brand of eclectic electronic music in an appearance on the Chinese talent competition Rave Now in 2018. Merry Lamb Lamb Q&A for Taciturnli
T: Do you have any small daily habits or routines that help you stay grounded and focused?
M: As much as I love spending winter days indoors working on new music, I still tend to go cycling almost every day. It feels as if cycling is part of me that needs to be activated and inspired. Sometimes I ride to a new cafe I discovered on Instagram, or I enjoy a familiar park gravel ride with my partner, Lung, at South Norwood Lake or Beckenham Park. After a good, warm coffee, we sit on the cold, elongated benches, gaze at the sun until dusk, and then return to our natural habitat.
Although I might travel the same old route every day, each time I’m on my bike, I notice I have become more attentive and mindful of my surroundings. That’s rare for me; I never experienced that when I lived in Hong Kong, and I really appreciate the change in myself. Biking keeps me so focused that I almost forget the usual tightness and intensity it brings. And I quite like that part of me too.

T: What project are you working on right now? Can you share a little about it?
M:I have been working hard on my new album with Lung in my cave lately. (Which will come out really soon!) This album represents a turning point for me, as I have fallen in love with cycling since moving to London.
Initially, I thought cycling would just be another sport I might enjoy, but it has turned out to be a deeper principle of life than I expected. I resonate with the experience of cycling uphill, where it often requires considerable effort to reach my destination. However, I have realized that the most important part is not the destination itself, but rather the journey and my perseverance throughout the process.
There is so much I want to convey through my cycling experiences. I envision each moment of my cycling adventures accompanied by a unique soundtrack. I aim to create a nonstop-like journey that captures my experiences on the bike, and I can’t wait to share how it all turns out.

T: Which song from your album means the most to you and why?
M: The answer to it changes every time. Sometimes I instantly love a song I just made fresh in my home studio, and the other day, when I listened back to my old songs, I hated them. I felt like an idiot and, at times, a bit impetuous while writing it. But in the end of the day, it is all part of a process —a process of accepting that moment of you, even if you love it or not, and your no-filter/pure emotion will not be able to give you a second chance if you don’t write it asap.
Every song from my album Genesis to my EP Exodus represents a piece of my growth and the rediscovery of who Merry is. Each year, I find my confidence growing as I write and produce more songs. Now, I am discovering how to convey deeper emotions; I draw listeners into my lonesome soul, tug at their heartstrings, and create tracks that move people even as they fill the dance floor. The shift in sound happens naturally, and I love how this always feels like the best part—being open to change and daring to follow what I desire.
T: How does it feel when you wear Taciturnli? Does it affect your mood or the way you move?
M:I used to love wearing a lot of vintage and cute stuff that I would find randomly on Depop or second-hand shops in Hong Kong. I also love wearing a lot of colors, as they shift my mood every time I put on something bright and bold. However, when I moved to London, my lifestyle changed because I needed more comfort, given my constant cycling and moving around the city.
And I like how Taciturnli reacts to me; it offers a sense of style with comfort. It almost feels like a soft blanket for me to lean on. I really enjoyed wearing my CALEDONIA W.R. JKT while I was scrolling around South Norwood Lake. The unpredictable London weather gave me an excuse to wear something light and easy to go with my long brown skirt, so that I could move around more easily.
T: What’s your favourite park in London? Why do you like it?
M: South Norwood Lake will always be my all-time favorite park. I love sitting there, watching the seasons change, and listening to music I have made at home or, sometimes, a random podcast. I often people-watch, observe dogs, and watch people rowing. This lake feels like a missing piece of my childhood, allowing me to simply enjoy the purity and tranquillity it brings to my heart.
This place is like a hidden gem to me. I was honestly quite sad when I moved out of this area, which was the first place I lived in London two years ago. But I believe everything happens for a reason and that it will only lead to good things. I wrote a song to this beloved lake recently. It is a song about moving on to something you feel precious about and having the courage to enter the next chapter of your life. I can’t wait to show you all what it sounds like when my new album comes out real soon.

T:Why did you choose to live in London? What do you think is the most special thing about the city?
M:I never thought about or chose to live here, but what brought me here is music and my dedication to giving myself a new, fresh start. I got the chance to move here to pursue my music when my manager at the time wanted to collaborate with me and pursue my music in the UK and Europe.
It was never easy to move abroad, especially when you’re too familiar with one place and feel very comfortable in it. But I feel like I’m about to reach my limit in Hong Kong, and I've been wanting a change severely, which is why I chose to move here. Two years later, I still find myself quite aligned with the lifestyle here —the quietness —and the choice to have my own space when I needed to.
To me, London is almost like a bit of self-reflection of myself, given the fact that there’s a lot of resemblance between Hong Kong and London, but what makes it so different is my choice of living. I can live at my own pace here, without pride or judgment. I can slowly allow myself to become the person I am, and be truly comfortable with it.
T: Where do you usually find your inspiration when you create?
M: Anywhere really, random noises, a quick conversation that I had with a barista in a coffee shop, my bike ride. Every time is different, and that’s what I love about it. I will also bring my phone with me whenever I can, to instantly record sounds that interest me and treat it as an audio diary. Bring it back to my studio and start gathering thoughts and producing a song that I want to convey, and start from there.
T: Has there been a moment recently when you thought, “I’m really lucky to be doing this work”? Could you tell us about it?
M: I mean, I’m very lucky to become Merry Lamb Lamb as I’ve tried doing all sorts of different things throughout the past years: designing a capsule clothing collection for a brand, scoring a soundtrack for a cartoon show, walking down the runway during Paris Fashion Week, being a face of a campaign, hosting a show, and participating in an electronic music variety show in China, etc. There are so many unpredictable yet exciting things I would never have thought I could do in my life. And I’m truly thankful for it all.
I always told my partner that I wasn’t the brightest kid in school, and I might not be the expert of the experts within music, but I guess my honesty and authenticity have always come through in what I do. And I hope I can bring this spirit into me, no matter what form of art I’m doing, till the end of my time.
T: Describe what you’re wearing today in three words.
M:Comfortable, waterproof, cozy heat-tech

T: Do you have any questions to ask Tacitunrli?
M: I know you guys are pretty well-known for repairing and encouraging people to purchase fashion items that will serve a lifetime. What are your thoughts on people nowadays slowly shifting their fast-fashion mindset toward a more nature-focused lifestyle? What are your thoughts and hopes about sustainable fashion in the future?
